Theme Documentation

Welcome to your new custom NationBuilder theme, built by Van City Studios. Included below is some documentation and some best practice tips for using your new custom theme.

Getting to know NationBuilder

One of the great things about NationBuilder is that they’ve developed an extensive library of resources that you can use to learn how to effectively use the NationBuilder platform. NationBuilder also offers free “Intro to NationBuilder” online workshops that are a great way to get more familiar with their platform or refresh your NationBuilder skills. You can check out their library of resources and workshop schedules here: nationbuilder.com/support.

General Notes on your Custom Theme

  • To ensure that your users have a good browsing experience and make sure that your navigation menu looks great, we recommend having no more than 6 top-level navigation links for your websites (or until the number of top-level navigation links makes the menu wrap into two rows). Other pages should be set up as sub-pages of your top-level navigation menu pages so they appear in drop-down menus.
  • When managing subpages on your website, remember that only top-level and primary subpages will display in your navigation menu. If you use secondary (or deeper level) subpages (i.e. subpages of subpages, or “sub-sub pages”), links to these pages will need to be added manually within the content of your pages.
  • The facebook and twitter links in your footer are connected to your website's Primary Broadcaster. For more on how to connect your Nation to your social media accounts, visit nationbuilder.com/how_to_facebook_twitter.
  • Any page tagged with "footer_col1" will display in "The Latest" column in your website's footer; any page tagged with "footer_col2" will display in "Get Involved" column in your website's footer, and so forth.
  • For the personal fundraising campaign feature to work properly, make sure that the "Show public profiles" option is selected in your Site settings.
  • If you add any featured content image sliders to any of your pages, we recommend using images tat are 1300px wide by 400px tall. Remember that any headline or action text you use will appear as white text, so be sure to choose images that are dark enough to make the text legible.
  • A "submit expenses" link will appear in the sidebar for anyone in your NationBuilder database tagged with the keyword "expensify".

Key Theme Pages & Special Considerations

Your custom theme requires several key pages to function properly, and some of these pages have special considerations to keep in mind:

Home (and all sub pages of Home)

Slugs:  home, section_1, section_2, section_3, section_4, section_5, section_6

Special considerations:  The hero section of your homepage that displays when a user is signed out pulls content from the "Headline" settings of your website (found under Site settings > Basic). The other sections of your homepage pull content dynamically from the homepage's subpages. This means that the content can be edited using NationBuilder's content management system, however making sure that the content displays properly on your homepage requires a solid understanding of HTML and CSS. If you want to update any of the content on your homepage, we recommend getting in touch with us. Also, make sure you don't delete any of the homepage subpages.

Start a Campaign (and all subpages of Start a Campaign)

Slugs:  start_a_campaign, school_signup, campaign_signup, campaign_donation, school_app_thank_you

Special considerations:  The start_a_campaign, school_signup, & campaign_signup pages have all been highly customized to create the campaign signup process for your website. Do not edit the content, settings, or slugs of these pages.

You can edit the content of the campaign_donation page, just make sure that this page is tagged with “campaign_donation” and that the slug stays the same.

You can edit the content of the school_app_thank_you page , just make sure that the slug stays the same.

Note that anyone who chooses the "I want to raise money for I Am Dyslexia" option and completes the signup process will be tagged with "personal fundraiser" in your NationBuilder database, and show up on the Personal Fundraisers directory page.

Make a Donation (and all subpages)

Slugs:  make_a_donation, monthly_donation

Special considerations:  These are the primary donation pages on your website. You can edit the content of these pages, just make sure that the slugs stay the same, that the monthly donation page is set up as a subpage of the one-time donation page, and that the monthly donation page has the tag "monthly option".

Sponsor a School

Slug:  sponsor_a_school

Special considerations:  This page is a specialized container page used to display all of the schools that have their own fundraising pages. You can add schools to this page by adding donation subpages to it (more on this below), but do not edit the content, slug, or other settings for this page.

Profile Page Text

Slug:  profile_page_text

Special considerations:  This page is used to control the static content that appears on all personal fundraising pages. You can change the content and headline for this page, just make sute that the slug stays the same, and that the page is tagged with "profile_page_text"

Slug:  faq

How to add schools to the Sponsor a School page

The Sponsor a School page is used to display all the schools/organizations that you have approved to raise money for their programs through your website. Schools can apply through the "I want to raise money for a specific school or organization" option under on the Start a Campaign page. When they apply, their information will be collected in 123ContactForm.

Once you approve a school/organization, you will need to add that school/organization to the Sponsor a School page. To do this, you need to add a new donation subpage to the Sponsor a School page. You can do this by navigating to the Donate > Sponsor a School > Subpages tab in your NationBuilder Control Panel, and clicking on the New subpage link.

When setting up a new donation page for a school, be sure to set up and connect a unique tracking code (found under the Finances > Tracking codes section of your NationBuilder Control Panel) for each school so that you can track the funds that should be allocated to each school.

Any of these donation subpages that are tagged with "featured" will show up in the list of featured schools at the top of the Sponsor a School page.

If an image is attached to a subpage page, it will display as the thumbnail image for that school on the Sponsor a School page. Thumbnail images should be 290px wide by 200px tall.
